Annie Smith Peck was born on October 19th,1850 in Rhode Island.
She was a mountain
climber and author. She also worked as a teacher of Latin. She set many records
during her career. She scaled the
Citlaltepetl volcano, Monte Cristallo … After climbing the Matterhorn in 1895 she tried to reach her
goal by climbing Mount Huascaran in Peru. She reached her goal in 1908 and for
her amazing achievement, the peak she scaled was named Cumbre Aa Peck in her honor.
Annie was
remembered for her adventurous spirit and determination .She wrote about her
adventures in her book A Search for the
Apex . She is also remembered for her "Women's Vote" banner that she placed on the top of Mount Corupuna in Peru in 1911.
Peck started a world tour in 1935 at the age of 84,but became ill. So she returned to her home at the Hotel Monterey in New York where she died of bronchial pneumonia on July 18,1935.
