Calamity Jane (Women Explorer) by Lina Teyar

CALAMITY JANE

Martha Jane Canary or Cannary was born on 1st May 1852 in Princeton, Missouri, USA. Better known as Calamity Jane, she was a frontierswoman and professional scout. She was recognized as a very kind person to the sick and needy ones; and also for her habit of wearing men’s clothes.
When she was young, her family and she moved many times and her mother died. Therefore, when they established in one place, she had to work to help her family; as she was the eldest of her brothers. She worked on very different and odd jobs. One of them was delivering mail for the pony express. Martha Jane was involved in several campaigns in the long running military conflicts with American Indians. She’s written her autobiography and published it in 1896, for publicity purposes.
Her death was very hurtful. Once, while she was travelling on a train, she had been drinking heavily and became sick. She died on the 1st August 1903, because of an inflammation of the bowels and pneumonia.
